Who we are

The SmartKids Foundation is an organization that fights poverty. SmartKids does this by financing education for underprivileged, highly intelligent children in developing countries. At this very moment, 60 Ghanaian students are attending classes thanks to their SmartKids grants.

Children we invest in

Sadly enough, the SmartKids foundation does not have enough money to send all children to school. That is why we have no choice but to exclude. Given this constraint we choose to send those children that create the highest return on the investment. Every SmartKid has been selected based on ability, mentality and drive. Only those children that wouldnít be able to afford schooling can qualify.

Every single one of these children has the potential to become an important person to his or her country. But without education, their talents would simply be wasted. They would remain unskilled workers, and work on the fields or sell water on the streets for the rest of their lives.

Snowball effect

The methods employed by the SmartKids program are not primarily aimed at saving these specific children from poverty. We want to guide well-educated and motivated persons of great integrity on a path to becoming terrific assets to their countries.

But these children are not just handed an education. We demand 100% devotion. That begins with very good grades. After their studies we expect of them that they actively contribute to the development of their region. In this way, a small investment causes a chain reaction of positive effects that continuously grows in force.

Spending it right

The Dutch SmartKids Foundation wholly consists of volunteers. Devoted individuals that do not just do the work, but also pay their own expenses. We make sure that 100% of donated funds end up in the developing areas. Furthermore, we aim to spend 95% of funds on the children directly and a maximum of 5% on indirect expenses (e.g. wages coordinators, communication).

In order to send a future teacher, doctor, architect or computer engineer to school we need 59 euros per month. For that sum, a SmartKid does not only get an education at a top educational facility. The children are also provided accommodation, clothing and three meals a day. That gives all of them an equal starting point, independent of their home situation.

Getting the results

We have been around long enough to see the results of the chosen approach. The SmartKids have on numerous occasions baffled us with their ingenuity, and devotion to mean something for those around them. We have seen that many of them have stayed involved in the foundation, helping 'new generations' of SmartKids as well as the coordinators. And ofcourse we have seen fantastic educational achievements. Its more than fair to say we are very proud of our Kids.
